Away From the Desk

Here’s wishing everyone a Happy Midsummer’s Eve, whenever you choose to celebrate it: June 20, 21, or the Christian one on June 24 (the eve of the birth of St. John the Baptist). This is also to let you know that I’ll be away from my desk — way, way away from my desk — from June 18-July 2. Julie and I are traveling as part of a mission team to Ukraine. We’ll be working in a small village on some home repairs as well as helping with a children’s Bible camp — and encouraging a local volunteer mission team of Ukrainian Christians. And celebrating Midsummer’s Eve, of course, in another part of the world!

It’s been a whirlwind summer so far, and the wind is going to keep whirling for awhile. But it’s a very blessed time. I am all moved out of my old apartment now, living among stacks of boxes in the new place. The wedding is coming soon!

Anyway, if anyone is looking for me during the next two weeks, I wanted to explain where I am and why I’m not on-line.

Enjoy this fine season! Talk to you all soon!

Great job on the hijacking! The best way to keep it a secret is to do it in such a way that no one know the blog has been hijacked.

Scott – that was funny! (“Why are you hiding in here?” I’m playing hide and seek with Tom. “Is he looking for you?” No, I haven’t told him we’re playing yet.)

Very exciting about the mission trip, Fred! I look forward to your report on it. Thanks for the joke, Joe! After a stressful day, it was nice to find that on the blog.

What is everyone doing this Summer? i know Mr. Brown is wearing a wife beater and bermuda shorts, chewing a cigar talking to baseball scouts, Hagio is chasing Eric Snowden for the NSA,,me it is a Summer of Fritz Leiber, and John D. MacDonald’s “Travis McGee” books. It was 111 Degrees on Saturday in the Antelope Valley, but it is not humid here, I do not complain. I went to see the Lancaster Jethawks destroy the Quakes (a Dodger minor league clube), on the 21st, I love Summer!

jhag, this summer, I’m re-reading The Odyssey (translated by Richmond Lattimore).

I’m on Book V! “Now Dawn rose from her bed, where she lay by haughty Tithonos, carrying light to the immortal gods and to mortals . . .”

    Cool! Homer!

Thanks to you brave few who stuck around here during the long silence of the blog!

On the plane to and from Ukraine, I read the early parts of John Fultz’s new collection The Revelations of Zang — my first-ever book read on an e-reading device, a Kindle! John’s a good writer.
